Pindar Vineyards on the Market, Though 'Nothing on the Table'

The biggest winery on the North Fork, with a retail outlet in Port Jefferson, is testing the waters.

A real estate listing is up for the East End's largest vineyard, which maintains a retail outlet in Port Jefferson Village – but nobody is going anywhere anytime soon.

While an online listing for Pindar Vineyards shows the 500 acres are up for sale, without a listing price, Newsday reported on Tuesday that an offer of $65 million could buy the vineyard.

"We would entertain offers. We would be dumb if we didn't," said Pindar Damianos, one of three Damianos brothers who run the properties first started by their father, Dr. Dan Damianos, in 1980.

"But it's not like we're going anywhere. There is nothing on the table. No papers to be signed."

Pindar wouldn't be the first vineyard in the area up for grabs, testing the market without an active buyer. Palmer Vineyards on Sound Avenue has been for sale for three and a half years, following the death of founder Bob Palmer. It remains on the market for $6.6 million. And Newsday reports that the agent representing the Pindar listing – Amir Allen Alishahi, of Sun Properties – is also offering Martha Clara Vineyards for close to $30 million.

Alishahi said on Wednesday evening that he approached the vineyards himself about a sale. "I have a lot of international clients looking to buy a vineyard in Napa and Sonoma, as well as South America. A few of them have shown interest in purchasing something New York City."

He added that he "should be having some serious from both individuals and groups on both Pindar and Martha Clara coming soon."

Newsday quoted Pindar Damianos' brother, Jason, as stating the company is "doing very well," and any attempt to sell was no reflection of the vineyard's financial status, which his brother echoed on Wednesday.

"We're a viable business," said Pindar. "And our careers are here. It's not like it's just my father and he doesn't have anybody to pass the business to. We all have children and families. This is our livelihood."
