Port Jefferson Ferry Terminal Relocation in Connecticut Stopped by Judge

Company still has its eye on moving dock on other side of the Long Island Sound to proposed site.

Despite an for relocating the Connecticut terminal of the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry, which officials said would trim time from the trip and provide a new $30 million dock for passengers, Newsday is reporting that a judge recently put the kibosh on the plans, for now.

But even back in May when officials were warming up to the idea, Fred Hall, general manager of Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry Company, said the plans were still evolving and CTPost.com reported that the company was still fighting with the city's Zoning Board of Appeals over variances in court.

According to the story in Newsday, that fight ended when a judge denied the ferry’s appeal.

The company still has plans to move to the site, the former Turbana Corp. banana docks, which ceased operations there in 2008 when its ships needed a deeper harbor, according to CTPost.com.

"The ferry company has possession of about half of the former Turbana site, and it hopes to purchase the rest at some point," the news website reported in May.

"If that purchase doesn't go through, we'd still have sufficient room for a viable project," Hall told CTPost.com.

An official from the Bridgeport mayor's office said in May that the original proposal might move jobs from Long Island to Connecticut but Hall told Port Jefferson Patch at the time that details had yet to be figured out.

"Our plans are still evolving," Hall said. "We have numerous scenarios to consider so speculation as to what positions or the likelihood of certain positions being moved elsewhere are not appropriate at this time."
