St. Charles Hospital Receives Patient Safety Award

Hospital recognized by Physicians' Reciprocal Insurers.

St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson has been deemed tops in a patient safety competition sponsored by one of the nation's largest medical malpractice insurers, Long Island-based Physicians' Reciprocal Insurers.

In 2011 the hospital began participating in a safety program called "Improving Patient Engagement by Active Rounding by Leadership" (i-PEARL), which "promotes patient care and safety through innovation and adherence to quality improvement principles," the hospital said in a release.

Through that program, various leaders visited newly admitted patients on a daily basis and immediately resolved any issues that arose, focusing in on matters such as physical comfort, communication, and planning and support during periods of high anxiety.

St. Charles has been awarded first-place honors in the i-PEARL competition.

“I’m thrilled that the hard work and dedication by St. Charles Hospital’s staff to patient safety and satisfaction has been recognized with this outstanding award,” said Jim O’Connor, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at St. Charles.
