11 Food and Drink Joints That Opened in 2011

Some local businesses that had their grand openings this year.

The types of food and drink establishments that bet against a bad economy and opened their doors this past year in and around Port Jefferson vary widely.

A tea room and a craft brewery both opened in the village while a burger joint and a smoothie place opened up next door to one another in Port Jefferson Station.

Here's a list of 11 (we'll get to why later) food and drink joints that opened in 2011.

After five years of preparation, Katie Poma and her mother Margaret Poma of Hauppauge opened their dream tea room, , in the heart of Port Jefferson this past spring.

With , his new "le style Francais" cafe and gourmet specialty shop at 216B Main Street, Joseph Ciardullo hopes its selection of domestic and imported artisan cheeses, craft beer, and small-production boutique wines provide more than nourishment; he aspires for an experience of culture, and an appreciation for life.

When their former tenant left the building they owned at 318 Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson, Joseph and Grace Tesoriero sat by as the spot remained vacant for over a year. Instead of continuing on the search for a new renter, the Tesorieros decided they’d rather fill it themselves. The result is a newly-opened boutique wine store called , which the owners believe brings something unique to Port Jefferson.

Diet? What diet? You didn’t come to because you care about your waistline so just get your butt down to the new location off of Route 347 in Port Jefferson Station for a burger. The toppings are free but the calories are not so don’t ruin your experience by counting them. Just go in ignorant and come out stuffed.

Another choice in smoothies appeared in Port Jefferson Station this year with Tropical Smoothie cafe opened its doors.

sprung up in May in the space where Long Island Best Desserts used to sit, offering a selection of 12-inch whole wheat Italian wraps. Simplicity is the name of the game here but what's inside these wraps is a lot more complex. We liked the .

Only a few months after opening in the Home Goods strip mall in Port Jefferson Station, Italian lunch spot shut down and not long afterwards, opened its doors int he same spot.

When the news of the closing of hit the streets this winter, many were left disappointed. Sure, Port Jeff has enough choices in pizza shops to be nicknamed but Anthony's was unique in that it provided a quick place to stop in and grab a slice on the go. There were no chairs or tables, just standing counter space for the late night crowd or a take-out lunch. Now, a new place, called has come to take the place of Anthony's and from the sound of it, it's off to a good start.

Look, don't blame us. Philbrick and and us he was working on opening his brewery in the village soon. These things take time. So finally, when he opens his doors what happens? Go figure. But we're happy now. Port Jefferson now has a brewrry named after it. All is right in the world.

After the Catch closed up at the end of last season it became just another in a string of places that have occupied the West Broadway location. Then in the middle of the summer a new restaurant opened up owned by Tommy Scafer, of Tommys Place.

Bonus: At the risk of sounding cliche, I'm going to use the oldest joke about numbers since the one about why six is afraid of seven and say that this list goes to eleven.
