Time Has Passed By This Classic Diner [Empty in Port Jeff]

Vacant diner on Main Street has old fashioned stainless steel look.

Formerly the Tropico Restaurant, this building at 1527 Main Street in Upper Port Jefferson has been around since the 1940s when it was built, according to an ad placed by its owner on Craigslist. Some of the plusses of this property is that comes with its own parking lot and has a full basement. The downside, is that although its very cool stainless steel diner design is sort of dilapidated.

The ad says that the diner is closed for business "due to partner disagreement." It's advertised as J2 Flexible commercial business zoning that allows for most retail and office uses and is 35 by 80 foot building on a 75 by 102 foot lot.

All this can be yours for $300,000.

The ad and the sign out front have the same phone number, but the person who answered the phone did not want to elaborate on the property listing to us for this article.

For the price, maybe the town should buy it and create a much needed parking lot for customers of the legitimate businesses in the area. The rumor around town was that this place was shut down by ATF because illegal firearms were being sold out of the basement. I have no proof to back that up, but that's been the long standing rumor in Port about the place.

Uptown merchants would LUV to see the diner become a parking lot!!...Other than the street parking, which is rarely monitored by PJ Code, there is no uptown parking...A big lunch or early dinner crowd at Tara's and poof, there goes all the parking spaces!.. As for the ATF rumor, it wouldn't surprize anyone uptown...The place was sans customers until dark, when it got hoppin' with drugs and prostitution...It was closed down and condemned...A few years ago there were crews of workers in there who promised to have it up and running again by that Christmas...That deadline came and went, along with most of the workers who refused to work there for fear they would literally fall thru the rotting floor to the basement... In the past year it has become the home of Rocky, the HUGE racoon that lives there and skulks around town in the wee early hours of the morning...For a couple of months (when someone left the door unlocked) it was the refuge of several undomiciled locals who were turned back out to the streets when someone (owner?) finally came down and locked the door....Now Rocky lives there alone.... I'm sure in it's heyday it was a wonderful eatery, now it would make a wonderful parking lot!
