Where To Give This Holiday Season

Everyone knows that this is the season for giving so we compiled a list of places you can give to help others this holiday.

As the holiday season rapidly approaches, it's important to think of those less fortunate. There are many places in Port Jefferson to go if you would like to help those in need.

on East Main Street is hosting a clothing and toy drive for homeless Long Island children. The organization in charge of this drive is Holiday Magic Long Island which strives to help more than 4,000 children on Long Island.  Stacy's Pattern Finders will be responsible for more than 30 children alone. All donations are welcome but necessities may be more important.

"Last year we had parents begging us not to get the children the toys on their lists, their need for the clothing  was so great," said Stacy. "For those families, we included supermarket gift cards as well as the clothing and toys."

You can drop off a gently used or new coat to the collection center at . Paul McElderry, a licensed acupuncturist for the Center and a volunteer, said the drive is very important to the center. 

"We did this last year and had good success," he said.

There are lots of convenient opportunities out there to make sure everyone will be warm this winter.  of Port Jefferson Station is also having a coat drive. For more information please call 631-474-9844.

will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest's annual , a lifeline for thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table during the holidays. To lend a helping hand, Panera Bread is asking its neighbors to donate frozen turkeys, supermarket turkey coupons and non-perishable food items.

In addition to these featured charity drives, there are many others scattered throughout the town of Port Jefferson to help you give to those less fortunate.

  • What: Hot Meal Program
  • Where: Church of St Garard Majella, 300 Terryville Road
  • When: Donations welcome anytime; hot meals are served Mon – Thurs: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; through the Christmas season

  • What: A children's charity providing financial, emotional and advocacy support for families with children with life-threatening illnesses
  • Where: Friends of Karen Port Jefferson Office, 21 Perry Street

  • What: Rebbe's Tish, a food pantry program that helps feed the hungry in the local Port Jefferson Community

  • What: Have you pet's picture taken with Santa Claus. $10 for a 5x7 print with additional prints $5 each.  All proceeds go to Save-A-Pet rescue shelter.

  • When: Dec. 4 and Dec. 12; 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

  • What: Local animals shelters are in need of pet food and other supplies. Donate through Nov. 29.
