Blog: Comics Writer Talks About Port Jeff Illustrator, John Buscema

Buscema, who died in 2002 from cancer, was a Port Jefferson resident.

In his blog series on crossover stories involving the Marvel and DC Comics universe of characters, comic book editor and writer Jim Shooter spoke fondly of the talent of John Buscema. Buscema had a home in Port Jefferson when he died from stomach cancer in January, 2002 at the age of 74.

Buscema is best known for his “robust renditions of characters like the Silver Surfer and Conan the Barbarian,” according to a New York Times article in the arts section announcing his death. He was hired at Marvel Comics by Stan Lee, creator of many classic comics heroes.

Shooter recalls Buscema’s style of drawing characters like Superman and Spiderman for a particular crossover story in his blog post saying he was “amazing.”

“I drove out to John’s house in Port Jefferson on Long Island a couple of times for business reasons,” said Shooter. “I don’t remember what the business was but I clearly remember spending time with John, meeting his lovely wife and seeing their wonderful home.”
