Does Brookhaven Town Boat Ramp in Port Jeff Need Better Warning Signs?

After third recent accident at ramp in Port Jefferson, we ask if there's need for more signage.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.

After news broke of Murray's tragic death, among the comments supporting her family and praising her dedication to serving the community through programs like Meals-on-Wheels, was concern over the ease in which someone could mistakenly drive down the ramp into the water.

"Isn't about time we put a better warning than the current small do not enter sign that exist?" in the article reporting the news. "This is not the first time a car drove on to the ramp."

According to Brookhaven Town, this is the third such similar accident to happen in Port Jefferson in the last few years where a car has gone into Port Jefferson Harbor.

Back in December 2005 another person died after driving into the water and the town was sued over the issue. In another accident, an individual under the influence drove his car into the water. The driver but got out of the car himself and was arrested by the Suffolk County Police.

"After the first incident in December 2005, a claim was brought against the Town for negligence but was dismissed on summary judgment by the New York State Supreme Court on the grounds that there was no negligence by the Town and that the accident had been caused by the manner in which the vehicle was operated," said Brookhaven Town spokesperson Jack Kreiger.

He said that it was determined at the time that the signs posted provided sufficient warning.

"These signs are currently posted at the harbor," Kreiger said.

Another commenter y the name of said the existing signage is not enough.

"Something else besides the Do Not Enter sign needs to be put there or it will happen again," he under the original article.
