Graffiti: Problem Around Port Jeff or Not?

Business owner discovered new graffiti over the weekend.

When Dentist Carl Palmblad went to his office at on North Country Road in Port Jefferson over the weekend he discovered a new piece of unwanted artwork adorning the back wall of his parking lot. Vandals had put up a black spray painted graffiti of a character head, a heart and what looks like the words “DELOVE” at some point on Friday night.

The white brick wall is actually the back of and faces the entrance to his lot on Walnut Street. Palmblad contacted the owner of the building and he agreed to have it painted over.

He admitted that this is the first time the lot had been hit with graffiti and hasn’t reported the incident to police.

“Have never had a problem like this before, although there was much grumbling about the ‘element’ that has been evolving in ‘Upper Port,’” he said.

Last fall on revitilization plans. During the meeting, the focus of many residents was on increasing crime in the area and quality of life issues.

Police reports around Port Jefferson do not show many complaints about graffiti either.

What do you think: is graffiti a problem in Port Jefferson? Or do you find this to be an isolated incident? Have you ever had to deal with graffiti on your property?

There's new graffiti on the concrete retaining wall along highlands boulevard too. Definitely done this weekend! Gotta police the streets at night.

Its a very rundown area but theres never been a big graffiti problem in the area, maybe in some spots such as the Rocketship Park playgrounds and some areas in PJS.

I personally believe that Graffiti is art. When done with taste and permission. The stuff I see around is trash. It's tasteless, and done so quickly (for fear of getting caught) Most of the pieces you see around are gang territory markings, which is exactly what I would like to see a couple block from home.... I feel like the police forgot about the whole upper port area

You can't be talking about the Port Jefferson school district BECAUSE "Upper Port" (south of North Country Rd) belongs to the COMSEWOGUE school district.

We painted over the graffiti adjacent to my property within 48 hours of the occurence. The Highlands Blvd graffiti has been there for a week now. When will that be erased? For ordinance rules see: http://portjefferson.patch.com/articles/brookhaven-notebook-graffiti-crackdown-overpass-repairs
