Heritage Park Smiley Face Ready to Bloom

Flip through a timeline of photos of the smiley face at Heritage Park, which is ready to bloom this Spring.

The big smiley face that adorns the hill at Heritage Park has been a recognizable landmark for years, and it is ready to bloom with daffodils this spring for the first time since 2005.

The face has been mostly made of grass since 2007, but in September of 2012 Fred Drewes of the Heritage Trust planned to set up a new daffodil smiley. With the help of the Parks Department, who dropped off compost and planned the outline of the face, and tons of kid and adult volunteers, it is ready to bloom for the season.

Volunteers drilled 3,000 planting holes with bulb augers in preparation, then planted the pile of 3,000 daffodils.

"The volunteers who planted the smiley face did a great job to help bring a smile to our faces," Drewes said.
