History: July Fire Destroys Dedio House

Despite damage, structure is moved and now used as a Mather Museum shop.

In July of 1973, a fire all but destroyed the Dedio house located on a lot behind East Main Street on what would be described today as east of Mariners Way, according to village historian Ken Brady.

Volunteers from the Port Jefferson Fire Department put out the blaze.

"Although severely damaged in the fire, the building was moved to Prospect Street in June 1974," Brady wrote in the historical arcives. "The renovated structure now serves as the Port Jefferson Historical Society’s Consignment Shop."
