“Main Street” Winds its Way Back Into Village Trustee's Hands

Book that he had sold years ago ends up back in Laurence La Pointe's possession Monday night.

When is a book a boomerang? Marge McCuen, owner of , and village Trustee Laurence La Pointe found out on Monday night.

McCuen presented La Pointe with a copy of the novel "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis that she found while rummaging through a pile of old books. She said she had discovered a familiar name written on the inside. A young Laurence M. LaPointe had put his signature there back in 1967. It was also stamped “Ex Libris Laurence M. LaPointe.”

LaPointe told McCuen that he remembered the book came as a gift from an attorney he used to know and he had donated it to for a tag sale a few years ago. McCuen said she bought the book at another location as a decoration to fill in the bookends she sells at her store.

McCuen regifted LaPointe’s appropriately named book back to him during the meeting after a long public discussion about noise pollution on Main Street in the village.

Neither one said if they actually read the novel or what they thought about it.
