Memorial Day Weekend Guide

What to do in and around Port Jefferson this weekend.

Finally, it's Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of the summer season. There's lots to do around the area this weekend and we've compiled some suggestions.

While you're out, also take a moment to remember those who gave the greatest sacrifice fighting for our freedom.

Saturday

  • - Every Saturday starting at 9 a.m. the church opens the doors of their red barn to everyone. New items donated every week and all the proceeds from the sale go to support the church and its missions.
  • - Head down to in to see . Volunteers welcome to sign up to learn the craft of wooden boat building. Starts at 9 a.m.
  • The Setauket to Port Jefferson Station Greenway Trail Ground Breaking Ceremony - The Greenway Trail will be expanding in Phase Two with a ground breaking ceremony with the joint communities, Friends of the Greenway (a sub commity of the Three Village Community Trust), local legislators and civic and scounting organizations. Starts at 11 a.m.
  • - Build a patriotic pinwheel to test and determine the direction of the wind as a part of the museum's ongoing Super Science Focus weekends. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • - Port Jefferson Brewery takes over the taps at at 8 p.m. $2 for Port Jefferson Brewery beers. Seven beers will be on tap.
  • - Hear some live music at starting at 10 p.m.

Sunday

  • - The market has a full house of vendors this week according to manager Donna McKewon. "The market welcomes back Kerris Kupcakes this season by popular demand," McKewon said. And there will be music is by Nigel and his Acoustic Bridge. From 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • - Build a patriotic pinwheel to test and determine the direction of the wind as a part of the museum's ongoing Super Science Focus weekends. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday

  • Memorial Day Services at Brookhaven's Memorial Park in Port Jefferson - The American Legion Post #432 from Port Jefferson Station will be holding a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. in Brookhaven's Memorial Park in Port Jefferson (across from ) to honor those soldiers who gave their lives in service to the United States.
  • - At Heritage Park, celebrate Memorial Day with a parade of flags. Flags of Suffolk County and the 10 towns of the county will represent our nation’s colonial period. Fifty state, five territory, Washington D.C. and 33 Old Glory flags will represent the various parts of our nation. Flags will be displayed from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • - Build a patriotic pinwheel to test and determine the direction of the wind as a part of the museum's ongoing Super Science Focus weekends. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
