Nor'easter Possibly Heading to Port Jefferson

Precipitation very likely for the area by midweek, though it could bring either rain or snow.

Port Jefferson has already exceeded the average snowfall for an entire winter by more than 20 percent, and it looks like there could be even more on the way coming up this week.

As bitterly cold arctic air continues to drain into the area this evening, it will set the stage for a potential winter storm in the Tuesday to Wednesday timeframe.  Temperatures tonight will likely dip into the single digits across the Port Jefferson area and only rebound into the mid teens on Monday afternoon. At this time, a storm system will be developing in the deep south. This system will phase with another area of low pressure diving southward out of Canada and spawn a Nor’easter off of the Mid-Atlantic coast. The storm will track northeast and begin to impact Port Jefferson anywhere from late Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon.

At this time, the exact track of the storm is still up in the air. Unlike with previous storms this winter, there is only a razor thin margin of error regarding the eventual track of this storm. If the storm tracks too far west, the area will likely see a change to rain. Regardless of the eventual track, the entire area should see precipitation begin as snow. It is too difficult to pinpoint potential accumulations or precipitation type issues right now, but this has the potential to be yet another major winter storm for the whole region.

Aptly named Accuweather Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski says, ” The storm could rank right up there with the Christmas Weekend Blizzard and could hit part of the same area.”
