Postcard Pic Shows East Main Businesses in Early 20th Century

We asked you to guess where this street was in Port Jefferson.

Last week we asked you to guess where this photo of Port Jefferson was taken.

Thomas Meehan was the first to guess and he got the right answer.

"Looking west from what is now the intersection of Prospect and East Main Street," he wrote in the comments. "Billies is the building in the center and I think that is one of the owners, Brian Meehan in the doorway."

While we can't confirm which individuals are actually in the photo that eagle-eyed Meehan identified, Village Historian Ken Brady confirmed the location in the caption to this picture.

The photo shows East Main Street looking west toward Main Street. Some of the businesses in the old photo are "the First National Bank, United States Post Office, and Port Jefferson Hotel, as well as C. P. Randall’s Real Estate, Irving M. Swezey’s Drug Store, and other businesses," according to Brady.

The above photo comes from the Kenneth Brady Collection. Find thousands of historical photos in the digital archive of historical images on the Port Jefferson village website.
