Quick and Dirty Boat Build Returns to Port Jefferson Harbor

Teams vie for the top prize in their own boats they build in four hours at Bayles Boat Shop.

This weekend, twelve teams will build a wooden boat in under four hours and test their skills in a race of their little vessels during the .

According to Long Island Seaport and Eco Center member Kathy O’Sullivan starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, team members will gather at the Bayles Boat Shop to put together their boats. On Sunday at the same time the teams will meet again to paint them and then the race is on.

"[At noon] a zany race takes place in the harbor," said O'Sullivan. "It tests the design and seaworthiness of the vessels along a 100 meter course."

Last year as crowds gathered to cheer on the contestents only one of the quick and dirty boats sank, she said.

The event is sponsored by the , North Shore Lumber Co. who donates the plywood and building supplies, and the Sika Corporation who supplies the adhesive to hold them together. Sika Corporaton is a sponsor of similar competitions around the world. Individual teams are sponsored by local businesses.
