Seaman Birchell Was First to Have His Name Painted on LIRR Steam Train

We asked if you could identify this Port Jefferson Station resident.

According to Port Jefferson village historian Kenneth Brady, the picture depicts Seaman Birchell, a man who lived in Port Jefferson Station and was the first engineer to have his name painted on the side of a Long Island Railroad steam locomotive.

"Birchell is shown in the cab of engine #212 in this photo taken at the ," Brady wrote in the archive of the photo. "He retired from the LIRR in December 1924."
