Third Snow Storm Heading to Port Jefferson

As we head towards the weekend, yet another winter storm is going to impact the area.

A storm system will drop south and redevelop a coastal low pressure system east of the Delaware coast on Thursday. This area of low pressure will then move towards the northeast as it brings snow to the local area.

Meteorologist Steven DiMartino of www.nynjpaweather.com expects the storm to gather strength over the Atlantic.

“As the low pressure system intensifies over the New Jersey coastal waters on Friday morning, areas of moderate to heavy snow will develop,” DiMartino said.

Temperatures for this storm will be colder than previous storms this winter, likely to be in the mid 20s throughout. Colder temperatures result in higher snow growth ratios, creating the powdery type snow that is relatively uncommon for coastal communities.

This storm is likely to not be as potent or long lasting as previous storms this winter.

Residents of Port Jefferson can expect snow to begin late Thursday night or early Friday morning, and last 6-10 hours. Right now, this looks to be a 4-6 inch snowfall. However, the track and eventual strength of the storm are still not set in stone, and the potential still exists for higher totals.

“This is a fast yet intense area of low pressure capable of producing a moderate to even a heavy snowfall for many locations,” said DiMartino.

So far, the Port Jefferson area has had around 38 inches of snowfall for the winter.  According to local climate data provided by www.northshorewx.com, the average snowfall for the entire season in this area is about 36 inches. This means that we are already over our average snowfall for an entire season even before this next storm comes through. And with February being the snowiest month of the year, the Port Jefferson area is likely to exceed its seasonal average by quite a bit.

The snow will taper off by Friday night, leaving bitterly cold air in its wake.  Low temperatures will approach 10 degrees this weekend, while highs will struggle to get out of the 20s. The next chance for wintry precipitation will be the middle of next week.
