Weather Alert: Thunderstorm Approaches Suffolk

The National Weather Service says hail and up to 60 mph winds are possible.

As of 11:49 a.m., the storm had reached Huntington, and it was moving east. Commack, Smithtown, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and Mt. Sinai are all in the storm warning area.

The storm is capable of producing quarter-sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour are possible, according to the NWS.

The NWS also said that a weak rotation within the storm had been seen on radar.

"While not immediately likely a tornado may still develop," according to the statement. "If a tornado is spotted act quickly and move to a place of safety."

The NWS recommends finding shelter in a sturdy structure such as a basement or small interior room.
