White Christmas Less Likely

A white Christmas may be out of the picture according to the latest forecast.

As we approach the weekend, the computer models are coming into better agreement regarding the potential for a winter storm. It now appears that Christmas day will be free of any inclement weather. However, the storm is still on the way, and will likely impact the Port Jefferson area Sunday night through Monday.

The European computer model is now indicating a storm moving off the coast with the potential for moderate snow. The American Global Forecast System (GFS) computer model is also indicating a storm, but is not quite as strong or close to the coast as the European model. At this point, a blend of these two models is the most prudent way to go. This would still imply some snow across the area, with the potential for 4 inches or more. This is the type of storm that will likely impact areas to the east the hardest. Since Port Jefferson is on the North Shore of Long Island, temperatures should be able to support all snow for the duration of the storm.

This storm is still more than 3 days away, which is an eternity in the meteorological world. There is always the potential for things to change, and whenever there is a strong storm forecast to be just off the coast, it bares close watching. You can check the local National Weather Service website to see if any watches or warning are issued for the area in the coming days.
