Gatsby’s “West Egg” and the “Slender Riotous Island” in the 1920’s

F. Scott Fitzgerald began to write The Great Gatsby during the eighteen months he lived in Great Neck, Long Island (“West Egg” in the novel). The focus in this presentation is on Long Island’s history, beginning with aspects featured in the novel, but looking beyond at the historical evidence and tracing the mythologizing of history and memory. Registration begins Wednesday, December 5.
