Energy Efficient Street Lights Coming to Brookhaven Roads

Town of Brookhaven officials on Wednesday announced a $1.25 million project to upgrade street lighting across the town.

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro said 2,500 non-energy efficient street lights currently in existence will be replaced with energy-efficient light-emitting diode fixtures. Lighting along major roadways will be upgraded first, with street lights in residential neighborhoods to follow.

The town estimates it will save $300,000 annually on electricity, which means the project will pay for itself within five years.

According to the town, LED lights are 60 percent more efficient than the typical high pressure sodium or metal halide lights currently in use, and cost less to maintain.
