BLOG: First 2 Dogs from Afghanistan Arrive

The first two dogs from a US military base in Afghanistan have hit US soil!

WHEW!

Socks and Blackie, the ended their journey to the U.S. this morning. As Guardians of Rescue volunteers went to the airport to pick them up, Erin, Kayla and I went into “OH MY GOD, COMPANY IS COMING!” mode and did a final sweep through the facility to make sure everything was "just so" to welcome our oversees guests.

We cleaned, we put together beds, we set up their feeding station, we decorated the kennels – the three of us were in total overdrive. Even our regular campers were excited! (OK, maybe they just enjoyed the nice weather and all the activity but why split hairs.)

And then they arrived! Filthy, scared and completely baffled. However, after a big lunch and a spa treatment, Socks and Blackie (who we’d like to rename Shoes or Sandals, haha!) went about exploring. They ran around, laid on their beds, peed on their beds, played with their toys, ya know, acted like dogs. Both are very lovable and sociable, considering everything they’ve been through.

I’ve had a few people ask me what breeds they are. Truth is, I have no idea. They look almost like border collie/lab mixes but I can’t imagine what either of those breeds would be doing in Afghanistan. Regardless, they’re absolutely adorable!

I’ll update as I can. Another round of dogs are due in so I'm sure tomorrow will be just as hectic! As always, check out the and Guardians of Rescue Facebook for more updates!
