Soldiers and Dogs, a Natural Love Connection

A new local program, matching veterans with shelter dogs.

The Fourth of July is upon us! It seems hard to believe that just a few months ago we were outfitting our dogs with sweaters when now we’re all fussing over which flag bandana to put on them and making sure the AC is set perfectly for their optimal comfort.

In light of Independence Day, I wanted to focus on giving back to those who help make all of our freedoms possible. Given the state of the world recently, I’m sure we all know someone who has served in the military. You may also know someone who has suffered an injury as a result of serving our country. And while Veteran programs abound in the US, there are few who focus specifically on the connection between soldiers and dogs.

On a local level, Hounds Town USA has begun a non-profit charitable organization that will focus on joining shelter dogs and veterans. Michael Gould, founder of Hounds Town USA, said, "As a retired police lieutenant and a disabled Navy Veteran, I am conflicted by trying to ease human suffering and animal suffering. 'Hounds Town Charities' is the perfect balance of the two: we rehabilitate people through the love from an animal." The focus of this particular program isn’t only rehabilitating veterans who are physically disabled, but also those who have suffer with emotional trauma, such as PTSD and depression. Additionally, the dogs used in this program will only be from shelters, hand chosen by the board members of HT Charities  - so it’s a win/win situation for all parties involved. If you know someone (or are someone) who would benefit from this program, please contact me: marianne@houndstownusa.com.
