Dueling Snow Whites-Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman

Mirror, Mirror-premiers March 16, 2012

Not one, but two Snow White movies are due to hit screen this year. Mirror, Mirror, stars Julia Roberts as the Wicked Queen and Lily Collins as Snow White. The story follows the plot of the Brother’s Grimm Fairy Tale with some variations. In an interesting twist, Snow White and the Queen vie for the prince’s affections. Snow White is less of pretty passive heroine and ends up fighting the queen.

Snow White and the Huntsman- premiers June 1, 2012

The tradition of Snow White as warrior continues and is expanded in Snow White and the Huntsman. The Huntsman tasked by the Evil Queen to kill Snow White decides instead to save her. The two team up to remove the Queen from power. Kristin Steward stars as the heavily armored Snow White. Charlize Theron puts her icy beauty to chilling use as the Evil Queen, and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is the Huntsman. Watch the trailer here.

The Hunger Games- premieres March 23, 2012

The Hunger Games (first film in the series) based on the best selling teen crossover series by Suzanne Collins arrives in theatres March 23, 2012. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, called Panem, it is the story of Katniss who chooses to participate in the brutal survivor game called the Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence (X-men First Class and Winter’s Bone) stars as Katniss and other big names in the cast include, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, and Lenny Kravitz. Anticipation has been building as photographs of the cast  in character have been released. You still have time to read the book before the film hits theatres!

The Avengers- premiers May 4, 2012

Not to be confused with the ever chic Mrs. Peel and and bowler hatted John Steed creation. This version of The Avengers is based on the hit Marvel comic book series. The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, The Black Widow, and more superheroes team up under the guidance of Nick Fury, (head of fictional agency S.H.I.E.L.D.) to fight a common enemy. An all star cast including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson reprising roles from prior films. Joss Whedon, of Buffy fame directs. Comic fans rejoice. Skyfall-premiers November 9, 2012

Bond is back! The forever chic, shaken- not- stirred spy returns to the silver screen after being away for three years. Daniel Craig returns as Bond in Skyfall. The plot is quite undercover, even for a spy movie, but it has something to do with M’s past coming back to haunt her. Javier Bardem is plays the villain. The production has suffered from financial issues that plagued MGM Studios, but is due to be released on November 9, 2012. No trailer has been released yet.

The Hobbit- premiers December 14, 2012

Like Star Wars, the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings was a bit backwards. The whole ring cycle has been made, but the book that started it all The Hobbit will be finally arriving on screen. It is being released as a two parter with Part One making its debut on December 14, 2012. Various legal and financial issues delayed production.  Much of the original cast returns with Elijah Wood as Frodo, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
