Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Turns 200 This Week!

Celebrate the 200th birthday of Pride and Prejudice by reading the original and many of the sequels available!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the novel Pride and Prejudice is a literary gem. Jane Austen’s masterpiece about the lives and loves of the Bennett, Bingley, and Darcy families is written with an elegant plot and language. This week marks the 200th birthday of this timeless tale.

Pride and Prejudice spawned quite a list of sequels. Some pick up directly where Austen left off, while others drop in on the characters who are now firmly settled into married life, and one casts Elizabeth and Darcy as detectives.

Here are a sampling of sequel for your reading pleasure:

Lathan, Sharon. Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy: Two Shall Become One

The story starts immediately after their wedding. Darcy and Elizabeth go on their honeymoon and then return to Pemberley to being their life together. They spend time enjoying each other’s company and the joys of marriage.

Odiwe, Jane. Mr. Darcy’s Secret

Elizabeth and Darcy are happily married and she is settling into her role as mistress of Pemberley. Georgiana, Darcy’s sister has fallen in love with a garden designer. Darcy does not approve, but Elizabeth supports the match. The families come to Pemberley for the Christmas holidays. The ever spiteful Miss Bingley makes a snide comment about events of Christmas’ past. While looking for a book in the library Elizabeth finds a packet of love letters written by MR. Darcy, but they were not addressed to her....

Collins, Rebecca. The Pemberley Chronicles

Perhaps the most ambitious of the sequels created, this ten volume series follows the married lives of the Darcys and the Bingleys. Set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution England it explores the triumphs, tragedies, gains, and losses of the Darcys, Bingleys and their descendants.

Ashton, Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy’s Daughters

In an ironic twist of fate Darcy and Elizabeth have five daughters of their own, and two young sons. Like their mother and her sisters each daughter has her own distinct personality. Love is lost and found and London society will never be the same after the Darcy girls have made their debuts.  Additional titles in this series are (listed in series order) The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Althea Darcy, The True Darcy Spirit, The Second Mrs. Darcy, The Darcy Connection, and Mr. Darcy’s Dream.

Bebris, Carrie. Pride and Prescience: A Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery

This is the first in a mystery series featuring Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy as sleuths. The story begins at their wedding breakfast where Caroline Bingley announces her engagement to a wealthy American. She marries him, and then odd events begin occurring. Miss Bingley is found walking the streets of London unattended with no memory of how she got there. After several incidents Darcy and Elizabeth are compelled to investigate. Containing touches of the Gothic 19th century novels, this series is a new vision of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy’s “happy ever after.”

Pride and Prejudice has also had several screen adaptations both big screen movies and a television miniseries:

Pride and Prejudice starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier

Pride and Prejudice Miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle (one of the best adaptations out there!)

Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley
