Roger Ebert Tribute

Stop into the library and celebrate the life of famed film critic Roger Ebert who passed away on April 4. Read some of his writings and watch some of his favorite films!

Famed film critic Roger Ebert passed away on April 4, 2013 after battling cancer for many years.

Ebert was the Chicago Sun Times film critic for forty six years. Ebert gained much fame and public recognition when he and Gene Siskel co-hosted a PBS movie critic show. (The show’s name changed frequently, but the gist remained the same- the two critics would either grant their famed “two thumbs up” or not). When Gene Siskel died in 1999, his role would be fulfilled by Richard Roeper until 2008, when Ebert was forced to leave the program due to his own health issues. Ebert battled thyroid cancer and in 2006 lost his ability to speak when a section of cancerous jaw bone had to be removed. While he could not longer present films on camera as he had done before, Ebert still kept up writing 5-6 reviews a week for the Sun-Times and was an active blogger. He was eventually able to present his views on camera having someone else read his reviews and also by using a computerized voice system. His last blog post was posted just two days before his death.
