This Show Takes the Prize: The Emmy Edition

These shows cleaned up at the Emmy Awards (September 23). Check them out and watch what all the fuss is about!

Modern Family (Second Season, Third Season)

Winner of Best Comedy Series, Supporting Actress(Julie Bowen), Supporting Actor Comedy (Eric Stonestreet), and Directing for Comedy, this hit comedy series focuses quite literally on the modern family.

Ed O’Neill (Jay Pritchard) is the patriarch, married to his second wife (Sofia Vergara) who brings her Colombian heritage and a teenaged son to the family creating some cultural conflict. Claire (Julie Bowen) is Jay’s daughter from his first marriage. She is a stay at home mom with 3 children. Her brother Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) has adopted a baby with his partner, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and the two men are raising the baby. The show follows their lives and presents the comedy of the modern family.

Homeland

If there was a BIG winner at the Emmys it would be Homeland. It won: Best Dram Series, Lead Actor- Drama (Damian Lewis), Lead Actress-Drama (Claire Danes), and Writing Drama.

Carrie Mathison (Danes) is a CIA agent with issues, who is pulled in from field work and re-assigned to the Counter Terrorism Center. Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody(Lewis) is a POW who was held captive by the Iraqis. He is released after eight years in captivity. Mathison has received a warning that an attack will come from a prisoner who has been turned by the Iraqis. Brody is her likely suspect, and Mathison will risk everything to find out the truth. This is a smart series full of twists and turns. Fans of 24- give this one a try!

While their actual shows may not have received Emmys this year these actors’ and actresses’ performances served them well.

Supporting Actress, Drama winner Maggie Smith won for her imperious portrayal of the Dowager Countess on the fan favorite Downton Abbey (Season 1 and Season 2.) Her commanding presence and arch delivery of some of the best lines of the show make her a character with which to be reckoned.

Jon Cryer won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on Two and a Half Men. The library holds the DVDs of all the 9 seasons (season 10 is the current one.)

Aaron Paul, the villain of the hit series Breaking Bad which focuses on terminally ill Chemistry teacher turned meth cooker, (Season 2, Season 3, and Season 4.) won for Best Supporting Actor Drama.
