Do You Know the PJFL? Part 2

There is a lot to see in the Port Jefferson Free Library. The Front Reading room has already been explored, so let’s focus on another section of the Library- the entry and display area.

Upon entering the Library you are in an enclosed glass atrium. Check the tallest wall on your left for a complete display of our upcoming program flyers. With programs from art to yoga, there is plenty to do at the Library!

As you walk in towards the doors take a look at what is on display in the flat case on the left and the tall case on the right. The exhibits change monthly so there is always something new to see. Many displays have featured the work of local artisans, including photographs, small scale sculptures, paintings, and other works. Interested in having your own artwork featured? See the Reference Desk for information and availability.

Once you have gone through the doors, you are in the Library building itself! On the low two shelf bookcase in front of you there are a variety of free publications such as parenting guides, Windcheck, and other free newspapers. Please feel free to take whatever interests you and enjoy! To the left of the shelf you will see a rounder(a rotating free standing display) featuring flyers advertising the Library’s upcoming programs. Pick up copies to use as reminders to sign up and attend. (Don’t worry the Library also makes reminder calls before the programs). To the right of the shelf you will come up on the Local Information/Travel Rounder. Looking for village maps, LIRR schedules, Ferry schedules, and more? You will find them here. The rounder is refilled as necessary and the newest train schedules are posted as soon as they take effect.

On your immediate right there is a display case. The upper glassed-in portion contains displays from the various local historical societies. On the shelves below the display you will find the “Cultural Happenings” section. “Cultural Happenings” features information about local art, theatre, and some NYC museum information. The information is updated as new programs become available, so check it frequently and become a patron of the arts!

To the left of the entry is a brick wall on which the Senior Information Center can be found. If you yourself are a senior, or if you know someone who is, please feel free to stop by and browse topics ranging from local community services for Seniors to Medicare, and even information about discounts just for seniors. The display is always being updated, so check back frequently to see what new items have been added. Any suggestions for additional information are welcome!

As a reminder for those who have never visited the Port Jefferson Free Library, it is just off of East Main Street on Thompson Street. (For detailed directions give the Library a call at 473-0022).

As always, if you require any assistance in finding the information you need, please stop by the Reference Desk and the librarian will be happy to help.
