Tech Support at the Port Jefferson Free Library

Libraries offer some great tech support, and the PJFL offers it free  to our patrons!

Tablets are a big trend in computing right now. A tablet is a mobile computer with all of its components in a single unit. This means it does not come with an attached keyboard. The screen is a touch screen, so it does not require a mouse. Users can go online, check email, check social media (Facebook, Twitter), play games, and read ebooks.

Have you ever wanted to try out a tablet? Get a feel for it and see if it would work for you?

The PJFL has some of the newest tablets for you to test out! The selection includes:

1. Ipad

2. Kindle Fire

3. Nook Color

4. Nook Touch

5. Microsoft Surface RT

6. Samsung Galaxy Tablet

The devices are out and ready for you to try. You can find  them together on one display directly across from the Reference Desk right near the DVDs. They are around the pillar where the Card Catalog computers used to be. (For those looking for the Card Catalog computers, they are now to the left of the stairs next to the copiers.)

Each device has a variety of programs (called applications or “apps” for short) already  installed to show users what is available. Most apps do not come preinstalled on your device when you take it out of the box.  If you have any questions or need some assistance with the devices on display, the librarians at the Reference Desk will be happy to help.

Do you already own a tablet, but need some help getting started? Want to start adding some of your own apps? Heard about the free ebook download service that the Library offers, but need help with your downloads? Sign up for a one on one help session with a librarian.  You can call the Reference Desk 473-0022, email the desk at adref@portjefflibrary.org or fill out the online form http://www.portjefflibrary.org/deviceadvice.html  Someone will be in touch to set up an appointment. The librarian will help answer any questions you have and help you get the most out of your Library and your device! Please bring your device fully charged to your appointment.

Remember the Library also offers a great selection of computer classes for those who use laptops or desktop computers. Check out our newsletter for the most current listing of classes http://portjefflibrary.org/yeoman.pdf (Sorry, Technology classes are open only to PJFL cardholders).

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the Reference Desk and the librarian will be happy to assist you.
