Celebrating Seuss

On March 3, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in kindergarten through fifth grade joined with millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the 16th annual National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday and the joys of reading.

The event, coordinated by elementary school librarian Selinda Moore, welcomed Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant, who read to students her favorite Dr. Seuss book, “Green Eggs and Ham.” In honor of Seuss, students sang “Happy Birthday,” dressed in stripes to represent the Cat in the Hat’s stovepipe hat, and were even treated to a special guest visit by the cat. Also in attendance was Joann Muscardin, head of children’s services at the Port Jefferson Free Library, who gave attendees themed bookmarks.
