Is the Route 25A, Echo Avenue Interchange in Mt. Sinai Too Dangerous?

Another accident in Mt. Sinai brings this intersection into the spotlight.

On Monday evening there was at the Route 25A and Echo Avenue interchange in Mt. Sinai. Patch has reported on numerous other accidents there, including one that and another that Readers have already pointed out how dangerous this portion of roadway can be for drivers. Others avoid it whenever possible.

Patch wants to know what you think: Is the Route 25A and Echo Avenue interchange in Mt. Sinai too dangerous? If so, what can be done about it?

It is dangerous because there is a green light for people merging onto 25a. This gives people the idea that they are safe to just zoom out there onto 25a. It used to be a yield sign there so people knew they had to watch for oncoming traffic. Also it is bad because many people are trying to get into the left lane asap in order to get onto 83.they are trying to scoot over 3 times in that short section of road. This also holds true for the eastbound side as well with people getting off 83 and immediately merging over 3 times to turn left onto echo. There needs to be at least some kind of blinking yellow light to warn motorists coming off of echo that they have to yield to oncoming 25a traffic when merging.

They need to close the merge and make everyone drive up to Pipe Stave Hollow to 25a and add a light there. Thats the safest way to fix the problem!!!!

They should do a traffic study there and re-configure the lighting. It would also help if people would slow down, avoid playing "beat the light" and....finally STOP using cell phones in any capacity. The law regarding cell phones is ludicrous...it is not reinforced and no one respects it.

Yes Antoinette, I agree! The biggest problem is most people speed along this area. They come off of Rt. 83 and think they are still able to go 55+ mph. I am going to watch my own speed in this area in the future.

This is a very dangerous intersection. Coming from the east, approching the intersection, if the west bound has a red light, it sometimes looks as if their light is green because of the green arrow lights coming out of Echo Ave. Especially at night. And I agree with Mr. Norton, cars merge onto 25A likes it's a speedway. They very rarely yield.

It's just bad and it should be changed to a 4 way intersection. Get rid of the merge, people don't respect it and think they have the right of way and no one should be in there way.

Sharon, I think excessive speed is a problem everywhere. No one seems to follow the 30mph in residential areas. I am often tailgated or passed by a furious driver impatient with someone following the law. I just have to pray that they are not rushing to their own funeral.

THIS is how the "red light camera" has hurt this neighborhood, and it's only going to get WORSE ! More will die thanks to JANE BONNER !

I am unaware of a red light camera at this location. If it exists, I doubt that it has contributed to this dangerous intersection.
Tom November 10, 2011 at 09:54 pm
No red light camera at this intersection. The only thing at this intersection is poor design and people with no regard for the law or other people. The Echo Ave. merge must go to save lives.

The red light camera is WEST..approximately 50 yards, west. OF THE INTERSECTIONS OF MILLER PLACE ROAD AND ROUTE 25A...at the strip mall exit in front of Friendly's and where the new Walgreens will go...there is "cut" off there now !
Increasingly, cars are using Echo Avenue to avoid the red light camera and the now normal "build up" of cars, that occurs into Miller Place Road and Route 25A, especially during "rush hours".
