Middle School Student Advances to State Geo Bee

Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-grade student Leland Held has qualified to represent the district and participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee. This is the second level of the competition, which is now in its 26th year. Bees were held in schools with students in grades four through eight throughout the state to determine each school’s winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The top 100 scorers in New York State will compete in Albany this April.

The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he or she will represent New York in the national finals at National Geographic Society headquarters in May.
