Chief: House Parties a Problem for Village

Suffolk's Social Host Law will help control number of parties.

Port Jefferson Code Enforcement and Suffolk County Police Department will begin working together to reduce the number of house parties in the village this year.

“We have had a spate of house parties with underage drinking,” said Port Jeff Chief Wally Tomaszewski at the village board of trustees meeting on Monday evening.

Tomaszewski said that along with loud noise complaints, code enforcement officers are concerned with underage drinking and the possibility of teens driving after attending house parties.

The village will be “devising strategies” to combat the problem.

One of the tools that is available is Suffolk County’s Social Host Law. According to the Suffolk County Police Department the law was devised to deter anyone over the age of 18 from knowingly allowing a minor to drink alcohol by holding the adult legally responsible.
