Coast Guard Sweeps Local Waters to Prevent Intoxicated Boating

Coast Guard steps up presence in Port Jefferson Harbor.

As part of "Operation Dry Water," a nationwide effort to reduce accidents and eliminate fatalities due to boating under the influence, the U.S. Coast Guard participated in an interagency sweep of Long Island waters, including Port Jefferson Harbor, between June 28 and June 30.

The goal was "to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents, injuries and deaths among recreational boaters by increasing the visibility of enforcement the weekend before Independence Day, a holiday known for drinking and boating," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

According to the Coast Guard, in 2012, 26 fatalities and 30 injuries resulted from 45 boating accidents in which drugs or alcohol were involved in just the New England region alone.
