Fire Marshal: Arsonist Caused Recent Lawrence Aviation Fires

Suffolk County Police arson squad investigating two fires at Lawrence Aviation facility.

Two recent fires at Lawrence Aviation in Port Jefferson Station have been classified as arson and are now under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad, according to the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal.

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, a went up in flames. Then on Sunday, Sept. 4 over the Labor Day weekend, on Sheep Pasture Road. In total, three firefighters were treated for minor injuries during those fires.

"It was intentional," said a Suffolk County Police spokesperson about how the fires started.

The police do not have any information on how the fires were set. They are currently under investigation.

The attended a walk through with the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals to review the condition and contents of the remaining structures at Lawrence Aviation in the case that there were any future fires. Although the buildings are secured, they "still have some contents in them, mostly machinery," said a Brookhaven Town official speaking for the fire marshal's office.

"There are no utilities servicing the building and they are in poor condition," the official said.

According to the EPA all toxic material has been removed from the site and they are currently .

The Suffolk County Police Department arson squad is investigating the fire.
