Updated: Early Morning Condo Fire in Port Jeff Station

An early morning fire that may have started in the boiler room in one home at a condominium complex in Port Jefferson Station has caused smoke and structural damage to multiple units but luckily no one was hurt, according to residents of the building.

The fire on Cambridge Drive in the Sagamore Hills condominium complex was reported at about 6:45 a.m. on Monday morning. The community is located off of Route 112 just north of .

"I believe it was from boiler room," said one resident who did not give his name.

The resident, whose unit was directly affected, was visible distraught by the fire to his home saying he was alerted to the fire when he started smelling smoke. Although he has a place to stay while his home was being repaired he said he had just finished doing $5,000 worth of construction redoing his home.

Jerry Jentsch, who was visiting his girlfriend who lives in Sagamore Hills in a building unaffected by the fire, said they saw lights outside and he came to investigate. Jentsch is a volunteer with Islip Terrace Fire Department.

"It's the coldest day so far," he said indicating to where ice covered the sidewalk. "The water froze up."

Workers were out spreading ice melt over the sidewalk and streets where water from fire department hoses froze to the ground.

Dean Massa lives in the building where the fire started. He said he didn't have any major damage to his home, only some smoke and a window broken.

"I got back from gym this morning and saw smoke pouring out," said Massa. 

He then started knocking on people's doors to warn them of the fire. According to Massa the fire started in Unit 191.

A fire marshal on the scene told one resident that it looked like the fire started in or around the boiler room area of one unit on the ground floor.

According to a statement from Brookhaven Town, the fire involved "approximately 8 units."

"It is still under investigation with no cause determination as of yet," said Jack Krieger, a town spokesman.
