Head On Collision in Mt. Sinai Sends Three to Hospital

Crash occurred at Echo Avenue and Route 25A.

A head-on collision on Monday evening in Mt. Sinai at Echo Avenue and Route 25A sent three people to the hospital, one in critical condition.

According to police, the call to 911 about the two-car accident came in at about 9:40 p.m. One vehicle was driving east on 25A turning onto Echo Avenue while the other car was heading west from Echo Avenue making a right turn onto Route 25A when they hit.

Port Jefferson Ambulance along with Mount Sinai Fire Department responded to the scene with a second ambulance that came from Miller Place Fire Department.

According to the Mount Sinai Fire Department, three people were taken to Mather Hospital with injuries. As of Tuesday morning, one of the three accident victims was still in critical condition with head trauma and the other two were “doing better.”

This intersection has seen its fair share of accidents recently. Patch reported on accidents that happened there Another accident on

The problem with this intersection is the Echo Ave merge onto 25A. Cars traveling at high speed (40 - 50 mph) merge onto 25A going west. Another problem is the merge lane has a driveway for a business and a second entrance for a road between the two shops. This is not legal. What needs to be done here is change the traffic light for the merge to a stop light. Then make the intersection so cars can come across 25A to turn left and head east or go across into the Ranches development. 25A is a state road so lets give formal notice to the state that we will hold them responsible for future accidents. But then again no one has the balls to do that. But wait it's and election year!!!

I use this intersection everyday and although the merge lane is short (and shares commercial business entrances as mentioned above) I can't see anything in the design that would lead to a head on crash. Possibly the driver mistook the intersection as a "T" intersection and did notice the merge lane? I have seen drivers make this mistake before. I think this intersection would function better as a standard 4-way that accommodates a left turn from Echo onto 25A.

It wasn't pure design flaw, it was also driver error. It was from the close proximity of the lanes that change and also how the merger lane from Echo to 25A does not have a sign/light.

the only corner on long island where a green light is not really a green light!!!cars making a right heading west on 25A DO NOT have right of way as a green light normally implies....if you are not familar with this intersection you do not realize that your green light is also a merge lane..a green light should always mean the right of way...who looks for a merge when the light turns green? i can clearly see a problem why can't highway department...corner of miller place road and 25a has had so many less accidents since a left turn signal was installed..why did that take so long to figure out?

All good points have been made here about the design deficiencies of the intersection but the fact remains that all of the accidents that have been reported here involved either an impaired driver or an ignored signal.
