House Fire on East Broadway

A residence on East Broadway sustained damage to the exterior when a garbage pail went on fire late Friday night.

responded to a call late Friday night to a residence at 106 East Broadway in Port Jefferson. John Breuer, the homeowner, said that he was by the side of his home when he noticed a fire in his garbage can. He grabbed his hose to spray down the pails but the fire spread.

"The fire touched the side of the house," he said.

Breuer called the fire department and continued to spray water onto his home. He said that the fire was out by the time the fire department arrived.

The fire department soaked the side of the house making sure that the fire was extiquished. Breuer's wife was inside the home just going to sleep when the fire started. No one was injured in the home. The side of the house sustained damage to the exterior up to the second floor.

"It's an old home," Bruer said when asked why he thought the fire spread so quickly.

Police briefly blocked off East Broadway during the emergency. The cause of the fire is unknown and no other details were available from either the police or fire departments.
