Cops: Man Beaten, Robbed at Port Jefferson LIRR Station

Let's start getting descriptions , license plate #s and using our cell phones to call in EVERY time you see something. . Id like to see Mayor Garant get involved.

They come to the area because they can....They are not hassled for drinking, being drunk, laying all over town...They get fed by the local churches every night...They get clothing from the same churches...On Sunday mornings there is a group at the train station who gives out food & clothing...The DOT area has food & clothing give aways regularly...They can get whatever drugs they want/need from the dealers in the area...And many of them live in Section 8 apts/houses in the area...These people get rent paid, SSI or DSS checks, food stamps & every other entitlement they possibly can...Their money is spent on drugs & booze....They spend all their money within a week of receiving it and then go out begging for more (know the guy who begs at Pathmark regularly?....He lives in an apt in Upper Port...He owned a vehicle...Gets benefits....but needs extra to make sure he's got a full bottle for everyday...
Oh and 99% of these folks also have full medical coverage...They bounce in and out of the hospitals, they get all their perscriptiions for free, and sell off what they don't need....They even get their rehabs (which never work) 28 days or 45 days completely paid by the govenrment... As for SCPD, if they are so busy with crimes everywhere, why do we have nothing but one "trap" after another?...Uptown, now downtown....Why?...MONEY....Busting criminals fetches 0 dollars...writing tix brings in cash!

The PJ PTB know all about the situation, but very simply they DO NOT CARE!....Like those programs where slumlords are court ordered to live in their slums, perhaps we should gather up the mayor, the trustees and the code personel and have them live uptown until something is done....Betcha it wouldn't take more than a week TOPS, before their was action!!!

So after SCPD arrest these individuals for various violations of the law and they are released the next day by the court only for them to return... what then?

Riiiiight.....Sometimes they are gone for a couple days (eg. in lieu of bail) but they just keep coming back...Perpetrating new crimes, (maybe) getting arrested, back to jail and right out again...These are people with rap sheets longer than they are tall!....

Mayor Garant has been told about these problems, over and over and over....In public meetings, in private discussions, in emails....She SAYS that she understands & that the Code Chief is doing something about it...All lip service...NOTHING is done...(and now it seems that even the "Meet the trains to protect the riders going to their cars" program has been abandoned....
Getting plate #'s, descriptions, etc are a nice thought, BUT, the response to that is "we can't do anything unless WE (SCPD) actually SEE the crime"....In addition, most of these crimes are not committed by people in cars (watch the police blotter, you can see when SCPD gets on a "get 'em after they score the drugs" kick...That's when you'll see a bunch of arrests/tickets along North Country Rd for possession of drugs... Again, those who drive in and buy are DRIVING (eg. they do have cars) and show up to court and pay fines....The dealer on the corner has no money to pay fines... The perps who commit the robbery/mugging crimes are so familiar with the town they know who they can "hit" and where they can run to hide....(many run to apts owned by the other low lives who live in the area....

It is really quite sad....A few years ago, some good police work & code infraction violations COULD have turned the area around....How to get it back (short of lighting a match and running!) now seems impossible.....
UNLESS the town is planning to actually go with the plan that has been rumored for years....eminent domain,,,,Let it rot to the point of no return and then exercise eminent domain and level everything uptown and rebuild.....

GO MELS! You have it all correct. These drunks dont need medical attention and that is what the hospital is for! not for unlimited amounts of turkey sandwhichs and ginger ale ( which is what the DEMAND on arrival). We are then the ones to " care" for them, while another patient is having a stroke, heart attack, or in severe pain and need of their help.
I am not saying the police do nothing because in many situations here at the hopsital they have protected us BUT instead of worrying so much about cell phones and parking tickets they need to change their focus of interest. i.e.... the stabbing RIGHT in the VILLAGE of PJ... just a shame.

You are all correct port Jefferson is turning into a ghetto. Drug dealers drunks people coming up to you in bravo parking lot drunk and begging. Young people purchasing so called diabetes needles in rite aid, now legal for a 10 pack no prescription needed. It's a disgrace I don't want to shop in that shopping center. Family dollar won't purchase any more carts because they are stolen by homeless people everyday. On fire island 100.00 fine for open container of alcohol, if you get caught without a place to sleep you get arrested. Well isn't this town in the same county as Port Jefferson? Then why are people drinking all over outside and sleeping on benches and the train station? I will tell you why, because it's all about money, parking tickets downtown, pulling people over for going 35 in a 30 mph zone and other assorted Tickets pay revenue. Drunks beggars homeless why arrest them? No money to be made on them. It's really sad we have a police dept. getting top pay and I think they could step it up.

I have stopped using that LIRR station because of all the crime and loitering. You have illegals and bums always loitering around asking people for money. Years ago I used to see COPE cars but on my most recent visits police are nowhere to be found. The criminals know it and walk around with impunity like they own it. Why is the SCPD and The Village looking the other way? Paid off by those who use the cheap labor? Knowing they cant make $$ off arresting these ppl? 112 by the train station and Bravo looks just like Suffolk Ave in Brentwood and CI. Even down in lower Port, I have a friend who works down there who finds trash and beer bottles left by illegals loitering by their business. Port Jeff isnt the only town, Riverhead by the train station has the same problems. I'm fed up with these elected officials, WHO SWORE THEY'D UPHOLD LAWS when they took office and then telling me I'm "intolerant" when I complain about the loitering and intoxication. It's ILLEGAL, they are BREAKING THE LAW, its YOUR DAMN JOB TO REMOVE THEM FROM SOCIETY!!! What do we pay these cops and politicians for anyway? To give granny a speeding ticket and eat donuts all day??? How many more innocent, law abiding citizens have to put up with being stared at, robbed, beaten, or worse? People in the community need to stand up and take back the government from these interests that protect criminals!!

Penn station is no better. There are homeless laying all over the place.The bathrooms are used for there personal washing and the water fountain is there for them to fill up there plastic bottles i wouldnt drink out of that fountain in fear of getting a desease Crime is up they have no other place to go. Shelters have closed down thanks to the Mayor and the economy.

Laws need to change. Our polititions need to find the finances to keep the shelters open to house the homeless. Laws need to change to make it mandatory for the homeless to go to shelters and be psychological evaluated and get help.

Nope, have no hatred for cops....just loathe the fact that their jobs are centered on ticketing to bring in $$$, more than they are concerned with eliminating crime or working to prevent it...

You have to understand the mentality of the homeless....While there are some who are forced to the streets due to economic situations, many, many of them choose to be homeless...Why?...Because living on the streets means no responsiblities, no rules....Their lives consist of begging, drinking/drugging..passing out somewhere for the night...and starting the next day in the same routine...
Shelters have rules..shelters don't allow those who wasted to enter...shelters have curfews...shelters require residents to seek government aid (residents of Pax are SUPPOSED to go to DSS each day to apply for aid).... Many of these people have families who find them, take them back home only to have the individual leave for the streets because they cannot function in a normal everyday household... It's like a club or a gang...they hang together, they drink together, they lay around together (just check out the fence to GMA, facing 7-11...On most days you'll see 4 or more of them just sprawled out there....Time means nothing, EXCEPT when it's time (6pm) for the dinners...Then you will see a migration to the church of the day....Take a ride down to the train station on Sunday morning...See the prayer circle, those who do not participate standing and waiting and then see the food & clothing handed out... As for the psyc eval, even Stony Brook, which has the CPAC (sp?) program no longer holds people for 24 to 48 hours...In and out they go....

Ok, did ya read the police report in the Patch today?
Three men were arrested near 1618 Main Street in Port Jefferson on Aug. 4 and charged with disorderly conduct. Jose Purcell, 22, of Huntington Station, Joseph Arcuri, 26, of Bay Shore, and a 16-year-old man from Port Jefferson were all allegedly blocking the sidewalk and causing pedestrians to have to walk into roadway. They were arrested at 7:21 p.m., according to police. First off it's shocking that the police actually arrested these people for what is an everyday normal activity uptown (eg. blocking the sidewalk)...For those of you that don't know it 1618 Main is the Islandwide cab stand on the southwest corner of Main...As for the individuals arrested: Mr, Purcell is uptown regular, although he has no residence in the area (try googling his name and you'll see his address changes all the time!)...We've lost count on the number of times he has been arrested in Port...There is an OP against him for a resident of the area, but still he returns (I;ll bet that if I took a trip over there now, I would find him hanging out!)....The other two I do not know by name, but if they were arrested together, I am sure that their faces are familiar... These are just a few of the people who fight, rob & steal in the area...NONE belong there, but yet they return day after day after day...Because it's EASY....They know they can do what they want and simply get away with it....

As for the cab stand itself, it's a hangout for these low lives....
Every business uptown is dying (cept maybe the bicycle shop, which seems to be doing well..and good for them)...People's lives ruined because of scum like this and a town board that lives in a fantasy world and don't care one little tiny bit....

The illegal immigrants in that area have ties to MS-13. The homeless buy drugs from these people. That's very interesting Mels, that they hand out flyers for the homeless shelter in the most bum traveled area in NY at Penn Station. This must be why the numbers are multiplying.

First of all it is illegal to hand out flyers or any sort of papers inside of Penn Station without the written consent of the Station Master. If you see something say something.

grew up in Stony Brook, moved to port jefferson in mid 70's.Paid Taxes, worked hard,in St.Charles hospital.Just moved away to MD because THEY won the war without firing a shot.Homeless, illegals, whatever you call them, the bleeding hearts coddle them in the name of religion/compassion...and we LOOSE our childhood homes to crime and the scum rise to the Top.It's a nowin situation..move away..America STILL exists for hard working americans..just not on long Island.We are VERY HAPPY in our new hometown.If you stay, your tax money just goes on programs for lazy, illegals to soak up free SS foodstamps..you will NEVER see a return on your investment.It's an illegal immirant tsunami.....get out while you can...they won several years ago....you cannot fix it...too many bleeding hearts in Govt..........there are places in this country STILL that you can get return on investment...AND speak english when ordering a lousy cup of coffee

I didnt see your question, sorry. Close to a cop? I know one or two but I wouldn't say close. I think I do understand the complexity of their job and how they are probably the most scrutinized occupation out there. and when you consider the amount of responsibility they have versus the how much they bring home I think they're actually underpaid. I also would like to thank them for taking such a tough job and risking their lives everyday for us. And in fact I wish they gave out more tickets for running red lights or to the great many who are on there cell phones while driving or to the Mercedes I see parking on fire hydrants. I could goo on and on.... Mels would it be safe to assume you are not close to any Police Officers

funny (or maybe not) just got my Town of Brookhaven Statement of Taxes............County of Suffolk - Police $1,462.58 ( $100 per month for protection? I want my money back) I take a few of the morning trains at port jeff all the time and return late at night. I have NEVER seen an MTA officer or Suffolk cops there in 8 years? Cameras are great for the news media and the insurnace compay when the survivors need to fill out the claim. I'd like to know why i can't have the same personal protection carry permit i had in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for 10 years. I have Secret federal clearance, my fingerprints on file with the FBI, i was a range champion in PA, but i can't protect myself the next time these thugs come to maybe jump me? 1 on 1 I might have a chance.......against many? However they see i am armed and guess what? Really stupid laws here on Long Island and New York/NYC. The police and government are NOT protecting us as we are paying for obvisously. We are getting taxed to buy cameras and other revenue generators which do NOT increase public safety or deter crime. Its simple get of the cars and out of the barracks and do the job - OR let me protect myself and my family as i have every right to do so. Can I put this on the personal protecion carry permit as the justification? Are we not sure its dangerous out there?

We just relocated to Sound Beach and I was excited about it because of the proximity to Port Jefferson. However was completely shocked when my husband pointed put how close Pax Christi is to the train station. How did that legislation pass? It seems that these facilities were designed to help people get back on their feet but without the appropriate measures put in place, rehabs, homeless shelters and soup kitchens are nothing but revolving doors for people who have learned to manipulate the system.

I just want to add that a close friend of mine was assaulted and robbed in upper port earlier this week. For some reason his story didn't make the papers. However, it is just another example of how these crimes are happening so often in Port Jeff. By the way, the cops know who the assailants are (And, they are NOT homeless people, but are known criminals of the area). Will justice be served?? Sadly, it probably won't. I honestly don't think the lazy ass and OVERPAID Suffolk County Cops give a crap about anyone or any of the crime in the area. It's an absolute disgusting shame. I grew up in the area but moved 20 years ago. The things I've seen and read - about how trashy it's become is unbelievable. I do blame the cops because it's their damn job to go after these people. But, they don't. Like I said, they know who attacked my friend but nothing is being done. The assailants are repeat offenders and have long rap sheets and the cops are doing nothing about it. Why is the SCPD one of the highest paid in the country? Somebody explain that??? And for the record, I know people who are cops, (I have two former NYPD cops in my family). I am just disgusted at how they have let Port Jeff and many other areas of LI go to hell.
