Update: Man Struck by Motor Vehicle in Port Jefferson Station

Homeless man struck on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station in serious condition.

A homeless man, Norman Coles, was struck by 78-year old Roberta Schlegel as she was driving her 1999 Dodge Caravan south on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station at 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say that Coles stepped onto Route 112 just south of Cherub Lane when Schlegal hit him. The Caravan's windshield was smashed.

Coles, 41, suffered head injuries and was taken by Terryville Ambulance to in serious condition. Schlegal, from Middle Island, was not injured. Police said that Coles is homeless and they originally had trouble identifying him. It was unclear if he was carrying any form of identification on him at the time of the accident.

A section of Route 112 was closed off between Jayne Boulevard and Cherub Lane immediately after the accident. Traffic was detoured through Jefferson Plaza parking lot while police inspected the scene.
