Police: Driver Drunk in Wrong-Way Crash, Two Seriously Hurt

Crash early Sunday morning in Smithtown seriously injures two people.

A Selden man was drunk behind the wheel and driving the wrong-way on Route 347 in Smithtown early Sunday morning when he collided head-on with another vehicle, seriously injuring two people inside, police said.

According to police, Pedro Hernandez, 24, was driving a gray 2000 Toyota Camry eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 347, just west of Southern Boulevard, when his vehicle struck a red 2006 Toyota Corolla around 5:30 a.m.

The Corolla’s driver, Reyna Pena, 52, and her passenger, Lorenzo Rodriguez, 53, were both transported and admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Hernandez was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police charged Hernandez with DWI and he will be arraigned at a later date.

Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

All the supporters of Dream Actors, must live in private communities or ON MARS !

Julianna - you and your 14 cats are disgusting. The statements were made because we actually step out into the world around us and open our eyes. If more people did and had a pair, this country wouldn't be in the state it is in... I'm thankful to have gotten my family off the Island five years ago, the skid in NYS - Long Island in particular is what's disgusting and pathetic. Wake up, miss high and mighty.

Too bad the Olympics didn't have a Conclusion Jumping team. Some of you would have won the Gold!
Mallory February 24, 2014 at 06:56 AM
I respect that everyone has their own beliefs and opinions. But, perhaps this debate that is going on in here could be more constructive if people were more thoughtful with their comments? Anger and frustration shouldn't allow for ignorance.
gmik gmik February 24, 2014 at 07:07 AM
Paul - profound. I prefer the Super G, myself. Pity our men's & women ice hockey teams didn't fare so well either.
brookhavenconfucius February 24, 2014 at 07:24 AM
Mallory, HOW do you expect Tax Payers to feel, when they are IGNORED ? HAPPY AND IGNORED AND FRUSTRATED, at the 'give aways', while they toil HARD, and 'do the right thing' ? THOUGHTFUL is the LAST thing, as this is REAL VILLE NOT 'college' !
AD LI February 24, 2014 at 07:31 AM
Licenses? They don't need no stinkin' licenses! The Obama administration will give them free ones.
Mallory February 24, 2014 at 08:07 AM
Brookhavenconfucius, anger and frustration is an appropriate feeling. You're missing the point completely. Making assumptions based on a name is ignorant. Wouldn't you be the fool if you found the two innocent victims in this tragedy were proud supporting members of a political party that supports your very same beliefs. But wait, names like Pena and Rodriguez, they don't count. If you're angry about local government then make that your voice. Don't make ignorant assumptions. If only we knew your real name then we could really make some assumptions.

This world is changing fast, and the shrinking working middle-class is paying for it. The same working class that does not vote. Keep complaining , but get to work , your country needs your taxes.
Rich February 24, 2014 at 09:18 AM
A persons last name does not indicate where they were born, merely ancestry. Just like there are lots of legal, born and bred Americans named O'Malley, and Chen, and every other name that has its roots in a foreign country. Furthermore, for those who made these comments because they "step outside and pen their eyes," a persons physical location plays no role in how a person looks when they are born. Again, only ancestry matters. They would look the same no matter where on this globe they were born.

Hey I'm sure these folks all had good reason to be out at 5am Sunday. Probably wanted to get a jump on their daily chores or on their way to work. Good everyone is alive.

Funny how when some local strung out kid raised on principles of entitlement makes the news in a wreck you clowns call it a shame but a mere surname brings out the INS enforcer in you. Curious how citizen status can be deciphered in merely name alone. I hope the driver gets what he deserves and most of all I hope the passengers in the other car recover as well.
Brookhaven999 February 24, 2014 at 02:04 PM
We're living in their world, now, and that has clearly degraded ours. Anyone who contradicts that must live very far from Central Islip and Farmingville. The Pew Hispanic Center, a non-partisan research center was reported on NPR a few years ago as having stated that hispanics (a misnomer, they're indigenous peoples of Central and South America) have the highest rate of drunk driving resulting in fatalities. The report went on to say that in their culture drinking=being a man. I quote from the Pew Research Center's website:"Criminal deportees (81% "hispanic") have been found guilty of a wide range of offenses. In 2010, one-fourth (25%) of such deportees were convicted of drug-related offenses, 19% of immigration offenses and 18% of criminal traffic violations such as DUI, reckless driving or vehicular assault. Together, these three offense categories made up the majority of all criminal deportations (62%)."
Mallory February 24, 2014 at 02:18 PM
Brookhaven999, while your comment seems thoughtful and well-researched, you too are missing the point. You're making assumptions about these three individuals based on their name. You know what happens when you assume....
Brookhaven999 February 24, 2014 at 02:23 PM
Mallory: Pena and Rodriguez do count, just ask Jeb Bush, the US Chamber of Commerce. Illegal immigrants who cross the Mexican border are Roman Catholic, extreme social conservatives (and yes, I do know that, because i've talked with many of them) and hostile to the very idea of paying social security, and taxes in general. Karl Rove has been using these very issues to quietly woo the people whom he believes will be enfranchised one day. What party do you think the children of today's undocumented immigrants are going to be voting for? The Democrats who wooed them with the Dream Act, and other benefits, or the Republicans they naturally indentify with? No question this is a huge boon for the the GOP, much as they put on act that they're opposed to illegal immigration.
Earl February 24, 2014 at 02:24 PM
I was just going to say it seems like the majority of the reported drunk driving stories seem to involved a hispanic driver. It's gettting way out of control, illegal or not.
Mallory February 24, 2014 at 06:08 PM
Brookhaven999, again, you're missing my point. I don't disagree with much of what you say. However, my point was to the posters who are commenting on the identity of these people without knowing anything other than a name. It's simply wrong. I'm most certain that many would not want to be judged by their name alone.
Paul L. February 25, 2014 at 06:14 AM
Brookhaven999, the article gives no information on their background, just their last names and yet you feel comfortable enough (or maybe it's just ignorance) to ASSume that they are illegals? That tells us a lot about you.
brookhavenconfucius February 25, 2014 at 06:38 AM
If PAST AND PRESENT, is prologue, we don't need ANY MORE information...Tax Payers have been BURNED, AND CONTINUE TO BE BURNED ! Take a look at your school taxes !
knee jerk February 25, 2014 at 07:55 AM
I looked at my tax bill and nowhere could I find any reference to illegals. Under which category could that be found.
Frank Esposito February 25, 2014 at 08:47 AM
Too bad this guys actions have broken this down into "cultural/racial" issues. Really it could have been any blockhead and any race who who could have done this. But I'll go with the flow here for educational purposes only.... Here we go.... Mestizos (look up the word) will take over Long Island... It's local governments will begin to take on a "Mexican" type governmental flavor as they populate the offices because their voting block will gain power. If you think American government is oppressive / corrupt; think again my friends. Learn to accept it or vote with ones feet and leave, but even then you are likely only buying time. Most whites have no sense of racial unity so they are going to be defeated and out-populated in this space we call long island. For all other groups, it is seen as "healthy" to desire your own neighborhoods and living space, your own "culture", but for whites that is somehow "evil" and "racist". A "Latino" school teacher can walk around with the latest copy of La Raza magazine under his arm and not fear expulsion or loss of job, but if a white teacher attempted to pull a "white" version of such an act, all hell would break out over it. BTW when I say White I mean to bulk of of Western Man and their traditions. So bye bye western man... you are being bred off this planet with little more than a whimper in defense of yourself. Sure you did some evil things in the past, but it is greatly outweighed by all the good done. But of cause that doesn't count for null. We are living in a world where 2 wrongs make a right and not many seem to care about it either way. Those starry eyed folks (mostly whites) who see the future as a beautiful mosaic are in for a shock because these other groups are not thinking that way or seeing that as a goal. And really there is nothing wrong with a healthy Olympic style competitive world. It keeps all races excelling and trying to be their best. Problem is... whites don't realize or refuse to acknowledge there is a competition going on any more.
brookhavenconfucius February 25, 2014 at 10:06 AM
kneejerk, You won't find it, literally, in your ever INCREASING school taxes. And you won't find a school board member admit it, but it's there...THEY ARE GOING UP AREN'T THEY ?
brookhavenconfucius February 25, 2014 at 10:07 AM
Frank, all one see's is A GENERAL ROLLING OVER and compliance to The State !
knee jerk February 25, 2014 at 05:20 PM
@Frank Espo: Remember, the laws put in place today to protect the rights of minorities will come in handy when YOU (and I ) become the minority in the future as George Lopez has so proudly predicted.

I spent the first 35 yrs of my life in the Bronx and the last 10 on the Island. I grew up in a neighborhood where in the 70's and 80's I saw the first Black, the first Puerto Rican, the first Guyanese families move in. I have to say that I'm glad they didn't have some of you for neighbors. I've often felt that Long Island trails the boroughs by about 20 yrs in its ability to garner racial tolerance and harmony. After this thread I feel like it may be 40 yrs. My kids hold zero prejudices against others regarding race, religion or orientation. Unfortunately, they share classrooms with the kids of people like you that have zero tolerance of others. This accident was an example of one of Long Island's epidemics: Drunk driving. The other is the explosive heroin problem. Miraculously, there were no fatalities. The victims will hopefully recover, and I'm guessing from their injuries sooner than from the topic of conversation discussed here on the Patch.

Paul L. February 26, 2014 at 09:12 AM
No, you live in Bigotville where people make fools of themselves by making huge ASSumptions. Now go hide under your bed waiting for the "evil minorities" to come take you away while the rest of us take care of business and get things accomplished.
Mallory February 26, 2014 at 08:36 PM
Wow. I don't even know how to respond to brookhavenconfucius and Smithtown Bull. All this talk of "these people" is just further proof that it's people like you who are in need of help. How do I say this any clearer? There...is...no...mention...of...race...or...ethnicity...in...this...article. People were hurt because of the stupidity of a drunk driver. Just be glad it wasn't you that was the victim - or the criminal! Boy, what would they say about you then?
