Police Rescue Pair After Kayak Overturns in Long Island Sound

Rescuers respond to 911 call on Sunday night in Mount Sinai.

Two people fell into the Long Island Sound on Sunday evening when the 14-foot kayak they were in overturned after hitting a large wave, according to police.

At about 5:22 p.m., a 911-caller told police that the pair were in the water about 3/4 of a mile off of Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai. Marine Bureau Police Officers John Vahey and Terry McGovern rescued Jessica Strawn, 29, of Sunnyside, and Luis Rodriguez, 29, of Glendale, and brought them to the dock at Harbor Beach Road along with their kayak.

Police said that the pair suffered minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital.
