Police Rescue Stranded Jet Skier Off Belle Terre Shore

New Jersey man was stranded on the Long Island Sound for four hours, police said.

A New Jersey man whose jet ski ran out of gas was rescued from the Long Island Sound about two miles north of the coast of Belle Terre on Sunday night, Suffolk police said.

Luis Rivera, 37, was found at approximately 10:40 p.m. after being stranded for about four hours.

Police said Rivera left Smithtown Marina at around 6:30 p.m., and said his friends called police when he did not return. The SCPD's marine bureau, aviation unit and the U.S. Coast Guard searched by boat and helicopter. Marine Bureau officers James Comstock and Joseph Devlin were able to find him.

Rivera, who was wearing a life jacket and was uninjured, was reunited with his family at the Brookhaven Town Boat Ramp in Port Jefferson.
