Police Searching for BMW Driver in Canal Road Hit-and-Run

Jogger remains hospitalized in critical condition after Sunday accident.

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the hit-and-run driver who left a jogger clinging to life.

Suffolk County police said Tuesday that they need residents to keep their eyes open for a light-colored 2000 to 2003 BMW sedan or station wagon that was involved in the Mt. Sinai accident on Sunday. The car would have damage to the front and passenger side, police said.

The vehicle was seen heading west on Canal Road, near the Mt. Sinai-Coram Road intersection, after it struck Karen Benjamin, of Coram, according to police.

Two days after the accident, Benjamin, 56, remains in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital, according to hospital spokesman Clinton Weaver.

She sustained serious injuries to her head, arms and legs in the crash and underwent brain surgery at Stony Brook hospital on Sunday night, News12 reported.

Police believe Benjamin was jogging along Coram Road when the the accident happened on Sunday at approximately 11 a.m.

Anyone with further information on the accident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
