Police: Thief Punches Smith Haven Mall Security Guard

Security guard was treated at the hospital for a severe laceration, police say.

A security guard at the Sears store in the Smith Haven Mall was seriously injured after a thief punched him in the face just as the mall was closing Saturday night, police said.

The incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. after a man stole two small tools from Sears and exited the store without paying for them, police said.

When a store security officer attempted to stop the man, the thief punched the guard in the face, causing a severe laceration, police said.

The security guard was taken by Nesconset Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, police said. No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate.
