Port Jefferson Sobriety Checkpoint Nabs 10 Drivers From Across North Shore

Charges range from driving while intoxicated to driving while ability impaired.

Police arrested 10 people on drunken diving charges Friday night at sobriety checkpoint in Port Jefferson Station, part of an increased effort to crack down of drinking and driving and prevent road deaths this holiday season.

The checkpoint, jointly run by Suffolk County Police, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police and New York State Troopers, stopped 632 vehicles at the intersection of at Route 25A and Route 112.

Five people were arrested for driving while intoxicated: Michael Palazzo, 49, of Port Jefferson Station, Ali Nazir, 29, of Commack, Brendan Nachtrab, 30, of Selden, Edward Drapala, 23, of Hauppauge and Hanorah Gholam, 22, of Mount Sinai.

Three were arrested for aggravated DWI: Efrain Cruz, 34, of Port Jefferson, Adam Dziadowicz, 29, of West Babylon and Jose Santos, 36, of Rocky Point.

And two people were arrested for driving while ability impaired: Michael Varley, 22, of Stony Brook and Nicholas Suesser, 21, of Shoreham.

All 10 will be arraigned Saturday at the First District Court in Central Islip.
