Port Jeff Station Man Unharmed, Another Dies in Early Morning Crash

Cops seek information about Route 112 crash that killed a Fort Salonga man on Wednesday.

A Port Jefferson Station man survived a crash early Wednesday morning after a Fort Salonga man died when he struck the tractor trailer he was driving.

According to Suffolk County Police, 89-year-old Albert Pierro was driving north on Route 112 when he struck the trailer while the driver of the 2009 Peterbilt, Port Jefferson Station resident Nikolaos Karoutsos, was making a left-hand turn into a metal shop.

The crash occurred in front of PK Metals, at 3542 Route 112, around 6:40 a.m.

Pierro was transported to Brookhaven Hospital in East Patchogue following the accident, where he was pronounced dead. Karoutsos was uninjured in the accident.

A Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section inspected the trailer and truck, and Pierro's 2005 Honda was impounded for a safety check.

Police are asking anyone who saw the accident, or who may otherwise have information about it, to contact Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.

The condition of the road in that location is absolutely horrendous, maybe that had something to do with this unfortunate accident.
