"There is no reason to believe this is anything other than a terrible accident at this point in time," Suffolk Police Lt. Det. Gerard Pelkofsky said at an afternoon press briefing. "We are investigating to make sure it is not negligence."

While the investigation is ongoing, police say it does not appear carbon monoxide was a factor in the deaths.

According to Pelkofsky, Michael Baldwin, the infant's father, returned home from work at about 9:30 p.m. after he was unable to reach the babysitter by phone. Coffey, who was watching the baby for much of the day, was found laying on top of the infant.

"It is possible she asphyxiated the child," Pelkofsky said.

The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy for the cause and manner of their deaths.
