Sandy Crimes: Storm Recovery Marred by Incidents

Looting and gas station disputes popped up across the region.

As locals in Northern Suffolk County and the East End of Long Island struggles to recover in the days following Superstorm Sandy's pummeling of the region, some areas saw specific crimes tied to the disaster.

Here is a list of a few:

- Police said a Riverhead man was arrested Thursday evening after they said he got in a verbal dispute at the Hess Station on Route 25 in Mattituck, and proceeded to drive drunk. He was arrested on misdemeanor DWI charges.

- Police arrested a Stony Brook teenager after he allegedly threatened to stab gas station employees. According to one employee, the 17-year-old asked for premium gas, which had sold out of earlier that morning. "He told us we better go find it," an employee said, adding that a little bit of foul language was thrown into the exchange. "So we told him 'You gotta go. We don't have it.' He said 'I got a knife on me. I'm going to stab you guys.'"

- An 18-year-old East Hampton man was arrested on a petty larceny charge in on Nov. 3, after he allegedly stole a gasoline canister and two segments of garden hose from a house on Mako Lane in Amagansett. A resident of Mako Lane called police at about 2:45 a.m. when she saw the man carrying a large plastic gas can and hosing toward a vehicle. She yelled out to him and he fled. Town police stopped a Chevrolet Blazer on Bluff Road, near Dune Crest, and found the defendant with the canister and hose on his lap. He was placed under arrest at 3:20 a.m. He was released on $100 station house bail. Police withheld the defendant's name due to youthful offender status eligibility.

- A gasoline looter struck Warren's Nursery on Majors Path in Southampton sometime between Nov. 3 and Nov. 5, police said. According to the report, someone climbed a fence on the property, broke a window and stole an empty gas can from one of the buildings. Subsequently, the person then siphoned gas out of several vehicles that were parked on the property.

- A quantity of copper piping was reported stolen from several homes on Cold Spring Point Road in Southampton that suffered storm damage. Extra patrols in the area were requested by the complainant.

- On Nov. 2, a New York City woman reported that alcoholic beverages were stolen from her home in Sag Harbor during the recent hurricane and some damage was done to the interior of the home. The house is located on Noyac Road.

- A burglary was reported in Hampton Bays Oct. 28 during which copper piping from a basement was removed from a home on Fairview Road.

the media is not covering the story associated with sandy aftermath. we have people on streets of long island begging...never in my life have i seen that until now. think there is some sort of political reason that this is not being covered on news... has to be. i know firsthand of many events that are not being reported. Long Beach, by the way, is like a third world country. Lots of stuff happening there that is not being covered on news. Same in Mastic and Rockaways
